      IDP renewal questions

      Can an IDP be renewed?

      Not by extending it: an International Driving Permit can't be extended once it expires. Instead, we issue you a new IDP with new dates, made from your current driving licence.

      How long does the review take?

      Usually under 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes longer, for example when a photo is hard to read. We email you as soon as your new IDP is ready.

      What do I need?

      Your expired IDP (a photo or the PDF), or one that expires within the next 60 days; your current driving licence (the front, and the back if it has details on it); a recent photo of your face; and your signature. You can take the photos with your phone camera and sign with your finger.

      My old IDP is from another provider. Is that OK?

      Yes. Whoever issued your old IDP, you can apply with us. You receive a new IDP from International DL.

      How long is the new one valid?

      1 year from the day we approve it. You can add extra years in the last step of the form ($5.00 each), as long as they fit before your driving licence expires. Your IDP is never valid past your licence.

      My licence has expired. What now?

      Renew your driving licence before you apply. An IDP goes together with a valid driving licence, so we can't issue one for a licence that has expired.

      What if you can't approve it?

      We refund you in full and email you the reason.

      Do I still carry my licence?

      Yes, always. Your IDP is a certified translation of your driving licence, so carry it together with your licence whenever you drive.
