Do I need an International Driving Permit?

Whether you need an IDP comes down to three things: where you're going, what language your licence is in, and whether you'll rent a car. Here's how to decide.

1. Your destination

Some countries legally require an IDP for all foreign drivers; others only recommend it. Check yours on our country driving-rules pages — each shows the requirement, driving side and minimum age.

2. Your licence language

If your licence isn't in the local language or Latin alphabet, an IDP is usually required so officials can read it — even in countries that otherwise wouldn't ask for one.

3. Renting a car

Rental companies frequently demand an IDP regardless of the law, and can refuse the car without it. If you plan to rent, getting one is the safe move.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I drive without an IDP when one is required?

You risk fines, a voided rental insurance policy, or being refused the rental. When in doubt, carry one.

Do EU licences need an IDP in Europe?

Within the EU/EEA, no. Non-EU visitors usually should carry one — check the specific country.
