How long is an International Driving Permit valid?
An IDP's validity is set when it's issued and is always linked to your national licence. Here's what determines how long yours lasts.
Standard validity
Most IDPs are valid for 1 to 3 years from the date of issue, depending on the plan and convention. The 1949 Geneva IDP is commonly valid for 1 year; the 1968 Vienna IDP often up to 3.
Tied to your national licence
An IDP is only valid while your national licence remains valid. If your home licence expires or is suspended, the IDP stops being usable immediately.
Country acceptance windows
Some countries only honour an IDP for a set period after you arrive (e.g. up to 6–12 months for visitors). Check your destination on our country pages.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew an International Driving Permit?
You don’t renew it — you simply get a new one when it expires, as long as your national licence is still valid.
Does an IDP work after my national licence expires?
No. It becomes invalid the moment your national licence is no longer valid.
